| Candidate for Research Coordinator
Rothlyn P. Zahourek APRN, PhD, BC, AHN-BC
Employment: Present Position: Retired from Clinical Practice; Adjunct Faculty; University of Massachusetts Amherst School of Nursing; Coordinator for Research in AHNA
Place of Employment: Self employed consultant and adjunct faculty University of Massachusetts, Amherst School of Nursing
Other Activities: I have been the coordinator for research on the LC for the last 3 year. I was appointed the first year after co-chairing the committee which at the time was being reformed. This was the first time there was a coordinator for research on the leadership council. Over the years I served in various leadership capacities with the Colorado Nurses Association and then the New York State Nurses Association. In Massachusetts I founded the Psych-Mental Clinical Nurse Specialists of Western Massachusetts.
Position Statement: I believe that holism is the philosophy for excellent care to our people and that our research is the basis for documenting the efficacy of our practice. I want to see our AHNA members asking questions and seeking answers. Using research approaches is increasingly necessary to advance both our education and practice. My goal is to develop the Research Committee sufficiently to foster members’ becoming more appreciative of the importance of holistic nursing research. This documentation of practice effectiveness and safety is increasingly important as our health care system dramatically changes. We need to document our practice and insure that the philosophy of holism, and the modalities that utilize that philosophy, are protected and fostered in healing and health care. I also want to nurture and support members of all levels of education and practice learning to use and participate in the research process. My hope is that AHNA members will be skilled at asking pertinent questions, and in planning and conducting research on their own and in conjunction with others.
