Holistic Nursing Research
Why is Holistic Research Important?
Research and technology continue to make extraordinary strides in curing illnesses and extending human life.
Holistic nurses recognize that healing – often defined as restoring and/or recognizing a sense of wholeness – can occur even in the face of illness, injury, and death.
Within such a philosophy of holism and healing, holistic nurses value such elusive concepts as care, presence, intuition, comfort, intention and intentionality, love, and compassion as well as spiritual recovery and quality of life. These concepts as well as interventions addressing these values need refinement and continued clarification. How do we use them in practice as well as in our research?
We need increasing evidence to support our belief that Holistic care can, and should, be integrated into all forms of health care.
Holistic Nursing Research is a principle avenue for developing the knowledge and evidence base needed to transform splintered care into holistic care. We need holistic nursing research to document the safety and effectiveness of our practice.
To accomplish this requires we dedicate ourselves to creating and fostering resources for all holistic nurses to learn to interpret as well as carry out research. Holistic nurses need to acquire research information to develop evidence-based holistic practice.
The membership of AHNA includes nurses who have expert research knowledge, education, and practical experience. In AHNA we aim to build a cadre of such experts who are committed to support, teach, mentor, and role-model investigating and using holistic theory and modalities in practice. This fosters the creation of a solid theory and evidence base for practice.
