The AHNA is a specialty nursing association serving over 5,500 nurses and holistic healthcare professionals in the USA and internationally. 

Our mission is to illuminate holism in nursing practice, community, advocacy, research, and education. Our vision is that Every Nurse Is a Holistic Nurse.  

In late 2006, the American Nurses Association (ANA) recognized Holistic Nursing as an official specialty in nursing and assisted AHNA in publishing the Holistic Nursing Scopes and Standards of Practice. Today, AHNA is well-known as the definitive voice for holistic nursing.

AHNA Announces Roxane R. Chan as President
The American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) announces Roxane Raffin Chan, PhD, MS, BSN, AHN-BC of Saline, Michigan has assumed the presidency of the AHNA effective September 16th, 2021, after the resignation of Elizabeth Scala, MSN, MBA, RN, HNB-BC of Baltimore, MD.  Roxane has served as the President-Elect since June, 2021 and previously served on the AHNA Board of Directors as an at-large member. 

AHNA Receives Circle of Light Foundation Grant Award Donation
The Circle of Light Foundation headquartered in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania recently donated to the American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) to honor holistic nurses by contributing to the following 2022 cycle scholarships $2500 towards nursing education scholarships as part of the Charlotte McGuire Endowed Nursing Scholarship Program, and, $2500 towards the Bea Alley Commemorative Scholarship to send nursing students (undergraduate or graduate level) to the annual AHNA 2022 Conference in concert with the criteria for awarding these conference registrations through an application and peer review process for selection.

The American Holistic Nurses Association has partnered with HEARTS: Health Enriched by the Arts and sponsored their musical, Nightingale: Regarding the Life and Passion of Miss Florence Nightingale. AHNA made a donation to HEARTS to help with production of the musical.

American Holistic Nurses Association Awards the Compassion Caravan with the 2021 Presidential Award
The Presidential Award in 2021 is for a dedicated group of holistic nurses. Their inspiring idea of celebrating the Year of the Nurse in 2020 by hosting a Compassion Caravan to promote the need for self-care and compassion within the broader nursing profession had to be re-envisioned unexpectedly in March of 2020. 

American Holistic Nurses Association Announces New President Elizabeth Scala
The American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) has sworn in Elizabeth Scala, MSN/MBA, RN, HNB-BC as the AHNA President for the 2021-2023 term. She was installed at the organization's 41st Annual Conference held virtually June 8-12, 2021.

Deborah McElligott was Recognized as the 2021 Holistic Nurse of the Year
The American Holistic Nurses Association announced Deborah McElligott, DNP, ANP-BC, AHN-BC, HWNC-BC of Point Lookout, New York as the 2021 Holistic Nurse of the Year. 

American Holistic Nurses Association’s 2021 Holistic Nursing Rising Star is Kelly Venditto
Kelly Venditto of Red Bank, New Jersey was recognized June 12th at the 41st Annual Conference as AHNA’s Holistic Nursing Rising Star of 2021.

American Holistic Nurses Association Recognizes Anna Larkin as Recipient of Charlotte McGuire Education Scholarship and Bea Alley Commemorative Conference Scholarship for 2021
Anna Larkin, BSN, RN, HNB-BC, ONC, of New York, New York, was presented with the Charlotte McGuire Education Scholarship and the Bea Alley Commemorative Conference Scholarship on June 12th, 2021 at AHNA’s 41st Annual Conference.

American Holistic Nurses Association Selects Kristen Reed as Recipient of 2021 Media Award
On June 12th during its 41st Annual Conference, The American Holistic Nurses Association recognized Kristen Reed, BA, BSN, RN, HN-BC, of Lynnfield, MA, as its 2021 Media Award recipient.

University Medical Center Southern Nevada Honored with Institutional Excellence in Holistic Nursing Practice Award from the American Holistic Nurses Association 
On June 12th, University Medical Center Southern Nevada (UMC) of Las Vegas, Nevada was presented with the Institutional Excellence in Holistic Nursing Practice Award at AHNA’s 41st Annual Conference.

AHNA Adopts Planetary Health Position Statement
The American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) recognizes planetary health as essential for future generations to come and that as humans we must take a holistic approach to improving our planets condition. AHNA has adopted a Planetary Health Position Statement and is releasing it today April 22, Earth Day, stressing the importance of planetary health including the inter-relational nature between human and environmental health.

AHNA Going Fully Virtual for 2021 Annual Conference
The American Holistic Nurses Association’s 2021 Annual Conference will be pivoting to a Full Virtual Conference. The decision to transition to a fully virtual conference was made by the AHNA Board of Directors due to the ongoing pandemic status and variants emerging. Registration for the AHNA Full Virtual Conference will be available starting Monday, April 12. We thank you all for your understanding and continued commitment to AHNA.

AHNA Board of Directors Appoints Linda Thomas to the Board of Directors
The American Holistic Nurses Association Board of Directors has appointed Linda Thomas, PhD, NPD-BC, CCRN, CHTP/I, HTAP of Sylva, NC to the Board of Directors to serve the unexpired term June 1, 2021 thru May 30, 2022 left void with the newly elected President-Elect Roxane Chan. She will serve a one-year term and her responsibilities in this position will include determining the vision, direction and guidance for the specialty association and representing holistic nurses nationally and internationally. 

AHNA Announces Albuquerque, New Mexico as the 2022 Annual Conference Location
The American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) will be bringing their 42nd Annual Conference to Albuquerque, New Mexico. The conference will be Monday, June 6 through Saturday, June 11, 2022 at the Hyatt Regency Albuquerque and the Albuquerque Convention Center. The 2022 Annual Conference will include participation by over 500+ holistic nursing professionals, an exhibit hall filled with vendors catering to holistic nursing, and the opportunity to earn continuing nursing education.

AHNA Introduces Roxane R. Chan as the President-Elect
The American Holistic Nurses Association announces Roxane Raffin Chan, PhD, MS, RN, AHN-BC of Lansing, Michigan as the newly elected President-Elect. She will be installed as President-Elect at the organization's 41st Annual Conference held in Orlando, Florida in June 2021. Her responsibilities in this position will be to perform the President’s responsibilities in the President’s absence, serve as intermediary between the Association and other nursing organizations, and act as a liaison between AHNA committees and the Board of Directors. 

AHNA Re-Elects Karen Avino to the Board of Directors
The American Holistic Nurses Association has re-elected Karen Avino, EdD, RN, MSN, AHN-BC, HWNC-BC of Wilmington, Delaware to the Board of Directors. She will begin her term at the organization's 41st Annual Conference held in Orlando, Florida in June 2021. Her responsibilities in this position will include determining the vision, direction and guidance for the specialty association and representing holistic nurses nationally and internationally.

AHNA Re-Elects Stasi Lubansky to the Board of Directors
The American Holistic Nurses Association has re-elected Stasi Lubansky, DNP, ANP-BC, HN-BC, CDE of New York, New York to the Board of Directors. She will begin her term at the organization's 41st Annual Conference held in Orlando, Florida in June 2021. Her responsibilities in this position will include determining the vision, direction and guidance for the specialty association and representing holistic nurses nationally and internationally.

AHNA Announces Jane Foote Re-Elected Treasurer
The American Holistic Nurses Association announces Jane Foote, EdD, MSN, RN, CNE of Rochester, MN has been re-elected as the Treasurer. Her second term will begin at the organization's 41th Annual Conference held in Orlando, Florida in June 2021. Her responsibilities in this position will include overseeing the finances of the organization and all levels of fiscal accountability, determining the vision, direction and guidance for the specialty association and representing holistic nurses nationally and internationally.

AHNA Elects Cindy Tatsumi to the Nominating Committee
The American Holistic Nurses Association has elected Cindy Tatsumi, MSN, RN-BC, HN-BC, PHN, Caritas Coach of Indio, California to the Nominating Committee. She will be installed at the organization's 41st Annual Conference held Orlando, Florida in June 2021. Her responsibilities will include recruiting potential candidates to serve in elected positions for the 2021 and 2022 ballots, acting on and cultivating leadership in committees assigned by the President and acting as a liaison between the Association and other organizations.

ahna releases nurse resilience series of self-care resources 
the american holistic nurses association (ahna) has released the nurse resilience series in response to the ongoing covid-19 pandemic, currently featuring five free downloadable resources with plans to add more. the resiliency series includes breathwork for resilience, beach and forest guided imagery for resilience, centering for resilience and tapping for resilience. encourage fellow nurses by passing on the gift of resiliency: email it, pass on the link, or print the pages and post in the break room. make connections and foster nursing resilience.

the american holistic nurses association (ahna) recently prepared 3 nursing displays, which celebrate 2020 the year of the nurse, for the local topeka & shawnee county public library.  the displays feature nursing figurines in the ahna nursing memorabilia collection. the themes of the three displays featured are the “200th anniversary of florence nightingale”, “nursing in the military” and the “future of nursing”.

American Holistic Nurses Association Awards the 2020 Presidential Award to Becky Lara
Rebecca “Becky” Lara of Phoenix, Arizona is the recipient of 2020 American Holistic Nurses Association’s (AHNA) Presidential Award. This award recognizes individuals who have provided outstanding service, and through their contributions, have supported the growth and success of AHNA. Becky is the current Editor for AHNA’s Beginnings magazine and has been with AHNA since 2004, helping to increase visibility of holistic nursing, nurture nurses around the world, and highlight the stories of holistic nurses.

American Holistic Nurses Association Awards the 2020 Research Grant to Siri Gurunam Kaur Khalsa
Siri Gurunam Kaur Khalsa, MSN, RN, CNE of Espanola, New Mexico, is the recipient of the 2020 American Holistic Nurses Association Research Grant. She will use this research grant to fund her PHD research project titled, "The Lived Experiences of Parenting Adults with Developmental/Intellectual Disabilities (DD/ID), a project to begin this coming Summer. Ms. Khalsa, using a hermeneutic phenomenological framework for this qualitative study, will interview New Mexico parents, who are still caring for their adult child with DD/ID.

American Holistic Nurses Association Recognizes Jaime Vinson as the Holistic Nursing Rising Star
Jaime Vinson, BSN, RN, HN-BC, RYT, of Fort Wayne, Indiana was awarded the 2020 Holistic Nursing Rising Star Award as part of the AHNA 40th Annual Awards. This award recognizes a new nurse who dedicates themselves to a holistic path, applies creative holistic practices, and epitomizes holism in their personal and professional life.

American Holistic Nurses Association Recognizes Sara Scheller as Charlotte McGuire Graduate Scholarship Recipient
Sara Scheller, BSN, RN, NBC-HWC, HNB-BC, of Point Pleasant, New Jersey was awarded the AHNA's Charlotte McGuire Education Scholarship for 2020. The Charlotte McGuire scholarship program is made possible through the generous tax deductible donations of AHNA members, friends and benefactors. Since 1987, the program has offered academic scholarships to Undergraduate or Graduate students in need of assistance to help them through their holistic nursing growth and education.

AHNA Announces New Endorsed Online Program: Integrative Nurse Coach Foundations
AHNA now endorses the Integrative Nurse Coach Foundations online course offered by the Integrative Nurse Coach Academy | International Nurse Coach Association (INCA). This nurse coach training course is 36 CNE and includes video recorded lectures, role play demonstrations, peer-to-peer practice experiential sessions, and live web conference discussions with board-certified nurse coach experts. This facilitates a competency of communication skills that influence lifestyle behavioral change in clients. Self-care of the nurse is a prominent theme.

AHNA Opposes the U.S.'s Withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO)
“Abdication of our expertise and contribution to the who, depreciates the legacy of healthcare leadership cultivated by the United States. We strongly disagree with President Trump’s decision, in particular during this pandemic crisis when it is imperative we do not become detached. This country must realign itself as an ally to scientific engagement, as COVID-19 is currently the utmost “deserving urgent global public health need” said AHNA President Barry Gallison DNP, MPA, APRN, NEA-BC, CPHQ, AHN-BC.

AHNA Supports Mask Usage and Social Distancing for Self-Care During the COVID-19 Pandemic
“Registered nurses are concerned about the well-being of all Americans during this pandemic and believe in promoting self-care by limiting face-to-face contact through mask usage and social distancing to reduce the spread of the coronavirus,” said AHNA President Barry Gallison DNP, MPA, APRN, NEA-BC, CPHQ, AHN-BC.

AHNA Applauds U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for Implementing the Whole Health System of Care (WHS) for Veterans
In response to the opioid crisis, in 2016 the VA began introducing complimentary and integrative methods of patient centered care to address chronic pain through an initiative called the Whole Health System of Care (WHS). The Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) funded 18 sites for a 3-year pilot implementation of WHS. A recent report was released to describe the implementation, utilization and effectiveness measurements of the WHS at 18 VA hospitals. 

AHNA Releases Position Statement on Racism and Racial Inequality
The members of AHNA wish to show our solidarity with those who are courageously condemning racism and discrimination. The membership grieves with those who have suffered the violence and even murder as a result entrenched in social misunderstanding, hatred and fear. Our hearts are with the families of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade and countless others.

JHN Publishes Spirituality Themed Issue
The American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) in their Journal of Holistic Nursing (JHN) released a 164-page spirituality themed issue filled with research articles on spirituality and their relationship to nursing practice. This special edition coincides with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) designation of 2020 as the “Year of the Nurse”, marking 200 years since the birth of Florence Nightingale, and AHNA’s 40th anniversary.

We will be offering a refund for all attendees and exhibitors refunds will be paid, minus advertising that has been provided pursuant to the exhibitor contract. Refunds will be provided on or before May 1, 2020 and all registrants and exhibitors will receive a detailed message about the logistics of these refunds. AHNA Releases Holistic Nursing Self-Care Strategies
AHNA pledges to continue to support healthcare providers through the COVID-19 pandemic. AHNA is aware that the elements that registered nurses typically use to stay healthy, may be inaccessible during this state of emergency. in response, we have created an evidence-based guide of holistic nursing self-care strategies. These simple techniques are designed to sustain the body’s immune system, even when self-care is a brief moment. 

Notice: AHNA Timeline for Conference Cancellation
On or before Wednesday, April 15, 2020 is the established time-line for making a decision regarding cancelling or going forward with the 2020 conference. The cancellation notice, if issued, would also contain the refund policy. Our database vendor is working on programming that would make issuing refunds more efficient, should it be necessary. Other areas for consideration include postponement, or virtual learning opportunities if the 2020 ahna annual conference on-site is cancelled.

JHN Publishes Article Addressing Holistic and Integrative Nursing Definitions
The article, "What’s in a Definition? Holistic Nursing, Integrative Health Care, and Integrative Nursing, by Noreen Cavan Frisch PHD, RN, FAAN; David Rabinowitsch, DNP, RN, AHN-BC, CHTP/I, CNE was recently published in AHNA’s Journal of Holistic Nursing (JHN) September 2019 issue. The article’s purpose was to help clarify meanings of holistic nursing, integrative health care, and integrative nursing.

 The American Holistic Nurses Association elected Marian Long, MSN, AHN-BC, HWBC-BC, CHTP/I of Grayling, Michigan to the Board of Directors. She will be installed at the organization's 40th Annual Conference held in Albuquerque, New Mexico in June 2020. Her responsibilities in this position will include determining the vision, direction and guidance for the specialty association and representing holistic nurses nationally and internationally.  

AHNA Elects Margaret (Maggie) O’Brien King to the Nominating Committee
The American Holistic Nurses Association elected Margaret (Maggie) O’Brien King PhD, RN-BC, AHN-BC, CNL of Naples, Florida to the Nominating Committee. She will be installed at the organization's 40th Annual Conference held in Albuquerque, New Mexico in June 2020. Her responsibilities will include recruiting potential candidates to serve in elected positions for the 2020 and 2021 ballots, acting on and cultivating leadership in committees assigned by the president and acting as a liaison between the association and other organizations.

AHNA Elects Becky Sassaman to the Nominating Committee
The American Holistic Nurses Association elected Becky Sassaman RN, BSN, HNB-BC of Highlands Ranch, Colorado to the Nominating Committee. She will be installed at the organization's 40th Annual Conference held in Albuquerque, New Mexico in June 2020. Her responsibilities will include recruiting potential candidates to serve in elected positions for the 2020 and 2021 ballots, acting on and cultivating leadership in committees assigned by the president and acting as a liaison between the association and other organizations.

Patch Adams Announced as Endnote Speaker for the 2020 Annual AHNA Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico
The American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) announces that Patch Adams internationally known speaker on wellness, humor, and joy will be the Endnote speaker at their 2020 Annual Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The event will take place June 1 through June 6, 2020 at the Hyatt Regency Albuquerque with the theme, “Holistic Nurses: Weaving Traditions to Create Solutions & Find Balance.”
