The AHNA is a specialty nursing association serving over 5,500 nurses and holistic healthcare professionals in the USA and internationally. 

Our mission is to illuminate holism in nursing practice, community, advocacy, research, and education. Our vision is that Every Nurse Is a Holistic Nurse.  

In late 2006, the American Nurses Association (ANA) recognized Holistic Nursing as an official specialty in nursing and assisted AHNA in publishing the Holistic Nursing Scopes and Standards of Practice. Today, AHNA is well-known as the definitive voice for holistic nursing.

AHNA Announces New Endorsed Online Program: Integrative Nurse Coach Foundations
AHNA now endorses the Integrative Nurse Coach Foundations online course offered by the Integrative Nurse Coach Academy | International Nurse Coach Association (INCA). This Nurse Coach training course is 36 CNE and includes video recorded lectures, role play demonstrations, peer-to-peer practice experiential sessions, and live web conference discussions with board-certified Nurse Coach experts. This facilitates a competency of communication skills that influence lifestyle behavioral change in clients. Self-Care of the nurse is a prominent theme.

AHNA Opposes the U.S.’s Withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO)
“Abdication of our expertise and contribution to the WHO, depreciates the legacy of healthcare leadership cultivated by the United States. We strongly disagree with President Trump’s decision, in particular during this pandemic crisis when it is imperative we do not become detached. This country must realign itself as an ally to scientific engagement, as COVID-19 is currently the utmost “deserving urgent global public health need” said AHNA President Barry Gallison DNP, MPA, APRN, NEA-BC, CPHQ, AHN-BC.

AHNA Supports Mask Usage and Social Distancing for Self-Care During the COVID-19 Pandemic

AHNA Applauds US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for Implementing the Whole Health System of Care (WHS) for Veterans
In response to the opioid crisis, in 2016 the VA began introducing complimentary and integrative methods of patient centered care to address chronic pain through an initiative called the Whole Health System of Care (WHS).  The Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) funded 18 sites for a 3-year pilot implementation of WHS. A recent report was released to describe the implementation, utilization and effectiveness measurements of the WHS at 18 VA hospitals. 

AHNA Releases Position Statement on Racism and Racial Inequality
The members of AHNA wish to show our solidarity with those who are courageously condemning racism and discrimination. The membership grieves with those who have suffered the violence and even murder as a result entrenched in social misunderstanding, hatred and fear. Our hearts are with the families of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade and countless others.

JHN Publishes Spirituality Themed Issue
The American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) in their Journal of Holistic Nursing (JHN) released a 164-page Spirituality themed Issue filled with research articles on spirituality and their relationship to nursing practice. This special edition coincides with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) designation of 2020 as the “Year of the Nurse”, marking 200 years since the birth of Florence Nightingale, and AHNA’s 40th anniversary.

We will be offering a refund for all attendees and exhibitors refunds will be paid, minus advertising that has been provided pursuant to the Exhibitor Contract.  Refunds will be provided on or before May 1, 2020 and all registrants and exhibitors will receive a detailed message about the logistics of these refunds. AHNA Releases Holistic Nursing Self-Care Strategies
AHNA pledges to continue to support healthcare providers through the COVID-19 pandemic. AHNA is aware that the elements that registered nurses typically use to stay healthy, may be inaccessible during this state of emergency. In response, we have created an evidence-based guide of Holistic Nursing Self-Care Strategies. These simple techniques are designed to sustain the body’s immune system, even when self-care is a brief moment. 

NOTICE: AHNA Timeline for Conference Cancellation
On or before Wednesday, April 15, 2020 is the established time-line for making a decision regarding cancelling or going forward with the 2020 conference. The cancellation notice, if issued, would also contain the refund policy. Our database vendor is working on programming that would make issuing refunds more efficient, should it be necessary. Other areas for consideration include postponement, or virtual learning opportunities if the 2020 AHNA annual conference on-site is cancelled.

JHN Publishes Article Addressing Holistic and Integrative Nursing Definitions
The article, What’s in a Definition? Holistic Nursing, Integrative Health Care, and Integrative Nursing, by Noreen Cavan Frisch PhD, RN, FAAN, David Rabinowitsch, DNP, RN, AHN-BC, CHTP/I, CNE was recently published in AHNA’s Journal of Holistic Nursing (JHN) September 2019 issue. The article’s purpose was to help clarify meanings of holistic nursing, integrative health care, and integrative nursing.

AHNA Re-Elects Roxane Chan to the Board of Directors
The American Holistic Nurses Association has re-elected Roxane Raffin Chan, PhD, MS, RN, AHN-BC  of Lansing, Michigan to the Board of Directors. She will be re-installed at the organization's 40th Annual Conference held in Albuquerque, New Mexico in June 2020. Her responsibilities in this position will include determining the vision, direction and guidance for the specialty association and representing holistic nurses nationally and internationally.

AHNA Elects Marian Long to the Board of Directors
The American Holistic Nurses Association elected Marian Long, MSN, AHN-BC, HWBC-BC, CHTP/I  of Grayling, Michigan to the Board of Directors. She will be installed at the organization's 40th Annual Conference held in Albuquerque, New Mexico in June 2020. Her responsibilities in this position will include determining the vision, direction and guidance for the specialty association and representing holistic nurses nationally and internationally.

AHNA Elects Margaret (Maggie) O’Brien King to the Nominating Committee
The American Holistic Nurses Association elected Margaret (Maggie) O’Brien King PhD, RN-BC, AHN-BC, CNL of Naples, Florida to the Nominating Committee. She will be installed at the organization's 40th Annual Conference held in Albuquerque, New Mexico in June 2020. Her responsibilities will include recruiting potential candidates to serve in elected positions for the 2020 and 2021 ballots, acting on and cultivating leadership in committees assigned by the President and acting as a liaison between the Association and other organizations.

The American Holistic Nurses Association elected Becky Sassaman RN, BSN, HNB-BC of Highlands Ranch, Colorado to the Nominating Committee. She will be installed at the organization's 40th Annual Conference held in Albuquerque, New Mexico in June 2020. Her responsibilities will include recruiting potential candidates to serve in elected positions for the 2020 and 2021 ballots, acting on and cultivating leadership in committees assigned by the President and acting as a liaison between the Association and other organizations.

Patch Adams Announced as Endnote Speaker for the 2020 Annual AHNA Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico
The American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) announces that Patch Adams internationally known speaker on wellness, humor, and joy will be the endnote speaker at their 2020 Annual Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The event will take place June 1 through June 6, 2020 at the Hyatt Regency Albuquerque with the theme, “Holistic Nurses: Weaving Traditions to Create Solutions & Find Balance.”

The American Holistic Nurses Association announces that Roxane Chan PhD, MS, RN, AHN-BC of Lansing, Michigan and Marian Long MSN, AHN-BC, HWBC-BC, CHTP/I of Grayling, Michigan were elected to the Board of Directors effective June 1, 2020. Becky Sassaman RN, BSN, HNB-BC of Highlands Ranch, Colorado and Maggie King PhD, RN-BC, AHN-BC, CNL of Naples, Florida were elected to the Nominating Committee. Barbara Dossey, PhD, RN, AHN-BC, FAAN, HWNC-BC announced as Keynote Speaker for the 2020 Annual AHNA Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico
The American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) announces that Barbara Dossey, PhD, RN, AHN-BC, FAAN, HWNC-BC will be the Keynote speaker at their 2020 Annual Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The conference will take place June 1 through June 6, 2020 at the Hyatt Regency Albuquerque with the theme, “Holistic Nurses: Weaving Traditions to Create Solutions & Find Balance.” The Keynote presentation will be on Wednesday, June 3, 2020.

One-Day Regional Self-Care Conference Coming to Savannah, GA January 17, 2020
On January 17, 2020, the American Holistic Nurses Association will hold a Regional Conference entitled Holistic Self-Care: Your Secret Power for Enhancing Patient Care in Savannah, GA at the W.W. Law Community Center. Nurses will learn self-care skills they can use at home or at work, meet local holistic nurses, enjoy a healthy lunch and earn 6 CNE hours.

One-Day Regional Self-Care Conferences in Irvine, CA November 14 & 15, 2019
On November 14 and again on the 15, 2019, the American Holistic Nurses Association will hold Regional Conferences entitled Holistic Self-Care: Your Secret Power for Enhancing Patient Care in Irvine, CA at the University of California Irvine, Student Center, Pacific Ballroom Level 1. Nurses will learn self-care skills they can use at home or at work, meet local holistic nurses, enjoy a healthy lunch and earn 6 CNE hours. Each day the conferences will start at 9 AM and end at 5 PM.

• AHNA Supports the HHS Pain Management Best Practices Inter-Agency Task Force Report
The American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) supports the HHS Pain Management Best Practices Inter-Agency Task Force Report recently released.  The Report identified gaps and inconsistencies in pain management and offered recommendations for improving pain management best practices. 

AHNA Pens Letter to NIH Director Francis Collins
AHNA President Barry Gallison sent a letter to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Francis S. Collins regarding the urgent need to recruit a licensed registered nurse with doctoral education and the appropriate research background to lead the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR). A non-nurse leading our elite nursing institution and evaluating proposals for nursing research presents a significant challenge to nursing and society.  AHNA finds it important that NINR Research Grant funding be spent wisely and be directed and implemented by qualified nurses. We believe such hiring will be positively received by the nursing profession and we are confident will serve the NIH, NINR and the public well.

AHNA Releases 6th Edition of the Foundations of Holistic Nursing (FOHN) Home Course Study
The American Holistic Nurses Association is pleased to announce the release of the 6th edition of the Foundations of Holistic Nursing (FOHN) home study course. The FOHN course is designed to assist nurses in building a strong foundation for holistic nursing practices and preparing to take the AHNCC Holistic Nurse Certification Exams. The FOHN is a 50 CNE self-study that participants have 9 months to complete.

AHNA Releases Holistic Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice 3rd Edition
The American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) has announced the release of the newly revised Holistic Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice 3rd Edition.  Co-published with the American Nurses Association (ANA), the new publication reflects the most up-to-date and relevant content aligned with Holistic Nursing’s Scope and Standards released in 2015.

ahna shares italian pain toolkit with italian nursing associations
the american holistic nurses association sent a press release, in italian, regarding the italian language version of the pain toolkit, pain relief tools for patients and self-care, to italian nursing organizations. in an effort to spread our vision and values worldwide, we wanted to make resources, like our pain toolkit, available in as many languages as possible. we already have spanish, portuguese and japanese versions available on the ahna website.

Call for Manuscripts Special Issue on Spirituality and Holistic Nursing Journal of Holistic Nursing
The Journal of Holistic Nursing is seeking submission of manuscripts related to spirituality and holistic nursing and how it relates to healthcare. This issue will emphasize the relationship of spirituality to the practice and science of holistic nursing.  The deadline of submission of manuscripts is August 15, 2019.  Manuscripts should be submitted electronically to the Journal of Holistic Nursing manuscript submission site, http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jhn.  Authors should review the aims and scope of the journal and use the guidelines for submission of manuscripts.  Authors will be assured of a timely review of all manuscript submissions.

Rose Hosler, RN, BSN, HNB-BC, HWNC-BC, of Mentor, OH, was honored with the 2019 Holistic Nurse of the Year award at the 39th Annual American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) Conference in Tulsa, Oklahoma on June 6, 2019. The Holistic Nurse of the Year (HNY) award recognizes AHNA members who have contributing to outstanding innovations or changes in the field of holistic nursing. It highlights nurses who have been working in holistic nursing for several years and have demonstrated a commitment towards AHNA’s core values.

Duquesne University School of Nursing in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was awarded the 2019 Excellence in Holistic Nursing Education Award at the AHNA 39th Annual Conference in Tulsa, Oklahoma on June 6, 2019. The Excellence in Holistic Nursing Education Award is intended to recognize schools, programs, and departments of nursing that offer a degree in nursing that exhibits an exceptional, substantive and innovative curriculum in holistic nursing education.

Stephanie Hope, RN, BSN, NC-BC, DNP student, of Minneapolis, MN; Mia Larson, RN, BSN, HN-BC, PhD student, of Saint Paul, MN; and Nicole Vilensky, Endoscopy Technician, of Long Beach, CA, were awarded the 2019 Bea Alley Commemorative Scholarship at the AHNA 39th Annual Conference in Tulsa, Oklahoma, June 2019. This scholarship was named in honor of lifetime AHNA member, Bea Alley, an early leader in holistic nursing, and is intended to keep her memory alive. The scholarship allows students to take part in the wonderful opportunities at conference so that they may expand their holistic education.

jaime vinson, bsn, rn, hn-bc, ryt, of fort wayne, inidana was the recipient of the 2019 research grant at the american holistic nurse’s association’s (ahna) 39th annual conference in tulsa, oklahoma, on june 6, 2019. she will use this research grant to fund research into “a quantitative study to assess the efficacy of weighted blanket intervention for pre-surgical anxiety, pain, and post-surgical restlessness and nausea in patients having surgery”. the research involves the application of a multi-patient, hospital approved, therapeutic weighted blanket.

raritan bay medical center (rbmc), in perth amboy, new jersey, was awarded the 2019 practice grant: implementing institutional self-care activities award at the american holistic nurses association’s (ahna) 39th annual conference in tulsa, oklahoma, on june 6, 2019. the practice grant provides financial support to initiate and integrate a self-care program for registered nurses and hospital staff within an institution. rbmc plans to implement a renewal room that will provide a peaceful escape for staff that are overwhelmed and stressed at work, and will facilitate the practice of loving-kindness for self and others.

mary b. johnson, phd, rn, ahn-bc (retired), chtp, of minnetonka, minnesota was awarded the 2019 lifetime achievement award at the ahna 39th annual conference in tulsa, oklahoma on june 6, 2019. the lifetime achievement award is given to celebrate the outstanding lifetime achievement in the field of holistic nursing; a way of acknowledging all the holistic nursing work accomplished through sustained participation in ahna and advancing the specialty practice of holistic nursing.

the american holistic nurses association will be hosting a presentation entitled “self-pulse for self-care: maharishi ayurveda®,” on sunday june 2, 2019 from 1:30 pm to 5:15 pm in tulsa, oklahoma at its 39th annual conference. this workshop will explore two approaches to health through maharishi ayurveda; the approach through consciousness: the principles underlying the evidence based transcendental meditation technique, and the approach through the physiology: the ancient technique of self-pulse or nadi vigyan. the participant will be learning to identify the difference between a balanced and imbalanced pulse, and experiential exercises will demonstrate how to promote balance through self-pulse and practical ayurvedic daily and seasonal routines.

the american holistic nurses association will be hosting an educational presentation entitled “healing presence and healing touch: critical skills for holistic nurses,” on sunday june 2, 2019 from 8:30 am to 5:15 pm in tulsa, oklahoma at its 39th annual conference. learn the skills of healing presence and healing touch for self and others. this experimental workshop will explore the healing nursing process and critical foundation of healing touch.

the american holistic nurses association sent a press release, in spanish, regarding the spanish translated version of the pain toolkit, pain relief tools for patients and self-care, to spanish nursing organizations. in an effort to spread our vision and values worldwide we wanted to make resources, like our pain toolkit, available in as many languages as possible. we also have a japanese and portuguese version; all three versions are currently on the ahna website. italian and french translations are also in progress and will be shared when finished.

the american holistic nurses association sent a press release, in portuguese, regarding the portuguese translated version of the pain toolkit, pain relief tools for patients and self-care, to portuguese nursing organizations. in an effort to spread our vision and values worldwide we wanted to make resources, like our pain toolkit, available in as many languages as possible. we also have a japanese and spanish version; all three versions are currently on the ahna website. italian and french translations are also in progress and will be shared when finished.
