Welcome to the American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) website. Here you will find information to assist your journey on the path to holistic nursing and holism. 

The AHNA is a specialty nursing association serving over 5,500 nurses and holistic healthcare professionals in the USA and internationally. 

Our mission is to illuminate holism in nursing practice, community, advocacy, research, and education. Our vision is that Every Nurse Is a Holistic Nurse.  

In late 2006, the American Nurses Association (ANA) recognized Holistic Nursing as an official specialty in nursing and assisted AHNA in publishing the Holistic Nursing Scopes and Standards of Practice. Today, AHNA is well-known as the definitive voice for holistic nursing.

AHNA’s Journal of Holistic Nursing (JHN) Receives Journal Impact Factor of 2.0
AHNA is pleased to announce that Clarivate, the global leader in providing trusted insights and analytics to accelerate the pace of innovation has announced that effective June 2024, the JHN impact factor is 2.0, which is very good.

AHNA’s 2024 Holistic Nurse of the Year Award Recipient is James Welch
James Welch BS, RN, HNB-BC of Georgetown, DE was announced as the 2024 Holistic Nurse of the Year. A member of AHNA since 2001, James has served on the AHNA Practice Committee, and chaired it from 2012-2014, and is currently also serving on the American Holistic Nurses Credentialing Corporation (AHNCC) Board of Directors. In that role he chairs the AHNCC Equality, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Belonging, and Social Justice Committee providing leadership in initiating programs that increase equity and inclusion. 

AHNA’s 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient is Cynthia Barrere
Dr. Cynthia Barrere, PhD, RN, CNS, AHN-BC, FAAN of Prospect, Connecticut has been selected to receive the 2024 AHNA Lifetime Achievement Award. AHNA’s 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award honors and celebrates the outstanding lifetime achievement in holistic nursing of an AHNA member. This is an award for an AHNA member that has had a lengthy presence in the field of holistic nursing at the National/International level who embodies the AHNA core values in their personal and professional lives.

AHNA’s 2024 Charlotte McGuire Holistic Nursing Graduate Scholarship Award Recipient Jocelyn Marx
Jocelyn Marx, MSN, RN-BC, HNB-BC of Tinton Falls, New Jersey was awarded $1000 through the Charlotte McGuire Holistic Nursing Endowed Scholarship that was established in 1986 through a gracious gift to the American Holistic Nurses Association. Since 1987, the program has offered academic scholarships to undergraduate or graduate students in need of assistance to help them through their holistic nursing growth and education.

AHNA’s 2024 Charlotte McGuire Holistic Nursing Graduate Scholarship Award Recipient Wendy DeGraffenried
Wendy DeGraffenried, BSN, RN, NCSN, HN-BC, of Wasilla, Alaska was awarded $1000 through the Charlotte McGuire Holistic Nursing Endowed Scholarship that was established in 1986 through a gracious gift to the American Holistic Nurses Association. Since 1987, the program has offered academic scholarships to undergraduate or graduate students in need of assistance to help them through their holistic nursing growth and education.  

AHNA’s 2024 Service Award Recipient Sara Humeny
Sara Humeny, MS, BSN, RN, NBC-HWC, HNB-BC of Point Pleasant, New Jersey was awarded the 2024 AHNA Service Award. The AHNA Service Award recognizes a AHNA member who consistently contributes their expertise and time to advance AHNA, its mission, vision and support its’ programmatic activities.

AHNA’s 2024 Practice Grant Recipient is Bayshore Medical Center For Establishing On-Campus Labyrinth
Bayshore Medical Center was selected as an AHNA 2024 Practice Grant recipient. The AHNA practice grant provides financial support to initiate and integrate a self-care program for registered nurses and hospital staff within an institution. The intent is to help institutions promote and encourage diverse models of holistic nursing activities focused on self-care, designed to provide nurses an opportunity to practice holistic nursing and extending their self-care influence and practices to other nurses and/or patients and families.

AHNA’s 2024 Practice Grant Recipient is UCLA Health For Creation and Distribution of Unit-Based Wellness Kits
AHNA’s 2024 Practice Grant recipient is UCLA Health. The AHNA practice grant provides financial support to initiate and integrate a self-care program for registered nurses and hospital staff within an institution. UCLA Health will be utilizing the 2024 AHNA Practice Grant funds to create and deploy Unit-Based Wellness Kits. These kits will promote self-care through reflective practices such as meditation, coloring & aromatherapy; physical healing & alleviation of pain such as massage overlay, aromatherapy & movement/stretching; empowerment & energy management such as meditation, aromatherapy, movement & coloring; & healing environments such as a break space map, essential oil, massage overlay & coloring.

AHNA’s 2024 Research Grant Recipient is Baystate Medical Center
Baystate Medical Center was selected as AHNA’s 2024 Research Grant recipient. This grant provides financial assistance to support holistic nursing research at the institution. The Research Grant has been awarded to run a Pilot Study on Aromatherapy on Anxiety and Pain in Patients undergoing Spinal Procedures. The research study will help to advance and generate new knowledge on the effects of lavender inhaler use on procedural pain, anxiety, and vital signs.The study supports the professional growth and development of a certified Holistic Nurse to elevate and implement nursing research in a clinical setting.

AHNA’s 2024 Institutional Excellence in Holistic Nursing Practice Award Recipient is Boston Medical Center
AHNA’s 2024 Institutional Excellence in Holistic Nursing Practice Award Winner is Boston Medical Center (BMC). The Institutional Excellence in Holistic Nursing Practice Award recognizes an institution's incorporation of holistic nursing practices that demonstrate the core values of holistic nursing and outstanding professionalism. Boston Medical Center has nurtured Integrative nursing practices, encouraging and supporting nurses to pursue education, self-care and integrative practices that contribute to the whole BMC community. The BMC Integrative Nurse Council has been impeccable at focusing on how the BMC nurses can enhance the patients’ whole person healing but also being mindful of the nurse’s daily/shift workload.

AHNA Seeks Executive Director
A search is underway for the Executive Director (ED) of the American Holistic Nurses Association, a 501 (c) 3 professional nursing specialty association, headquartered in Topeka, Kansas. The American Holistic Nurses Association has a membership of 5,000+ professionals in both the United States and abroad. Founded in 1981 with AHNA’s vision of a nursing profession and healthcare system that would nurture the nurturers and focus on “wellness” rather than “illness”. Terri Roberts JD, RN the current Executive Director will be retiring at years end. AHNA Board of Directors Elects Sara Humeny to the Board of Directors
The American Holistic Nurses Association has elected Sara Humeny, MS, BSN, RN, NBC-HWC, HNB-BC of Point Pleasant, NJ for her first two-year term on the AHNA Board of Directors beginning June 1, 2024. Her responsibilities in this position will include determining the vision, direction and guidance for the specialty nursing association and representing holistic nurses nationally and internationally.

AHNA Board of Directors Elects Teresa Fadely to the Board of Directors
The American Holistic Nurses Association has elected Teresa Fadely, MSN, RN, AHN-BC, ACNP-BC, HWC-BC of Dumfries, VA for her second term on the AHNA Board of Directors. Her responsibilities in this position will include determining the vision, direction and guidance for the specialty association and representing holistic nurses nationally and internationally.

AHNA Elects Sara Lewandowski to the Nominating Committee
AHNA has elected Sara Linn Lewandowski, DNP, MS, BA, BS, RN, CNE, HNB-BC, NC-BC, RYT of Houston, Texas to the Nominating Committee. Her responsibilities will include recruiting potential candidates to serve in elected positions for the 2024 ballot, acting on and cultivating leadership in committees assigned by the President.

AHNA Appoints Dawn Hawthorne to the Nominating Committee
AHNA has elected Dawn M. Hawthorne, PhD, RN, AHN-BC of Kissimmee, FL to the Nominating Committee. Her responsibilities will include recruiting potential candidates to serve in elected positions for the 2024 ballot, acting on and cultivating leadership in committees assigned by the President.

AHNA Announces American Cannabis Nurses Association as Partner Sponsor for the 2024 Annual Conference Location in Rochester, Minnesota
The American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) is pleased to announce the American Cannabis Nurses Association (ACNA) will be an official partner for the 44th Annual Conference in Rochester, Minnesota. The ACNA’s contribution will be providing a tract of cannabis related workshops which attendees will be able to select and receive nursing continuing professional development hours for attending.

AHNA Announces Reno, Nevada as the 2025 Annual Conference Location
AHNA will be bringing their 45th Annual Conference to Reno, Nevada. The conference will be Monday, June 10 through Saturday, June 14 at the Peppermill Resort Hotel. Lodging will be within the same venue. There are nine restaurants offering authentic Chinese, inspired Italian, Steaks & Chops, seafood, deli and café diner. The eco-conscious Peppermill Resort, Spa and Casino, an AAA Four Diamond Resort has 1,621 guest rooms and an indoor pool, sun deck and full service salon.

AHNA Announces Translation of Nursing Resilience Resources to Spanish
With the help of the President of the Chilean Association of Holistic Nursing, Jacqueline Wigodski S., the AHNA is proud to announce the Spanish version of the nursing resilience resources. All eight resources including: Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR), Jin Shin Jyutsu, Breathwork, Centering, Tapping, Beach Guided Imagery, Forest Guided Imagery, Movement Based Mindfulness have been translated and are available for download.

AHNA Releases Organizational Strategies and Holistic Personal Practices to Address Clinician Burnout and Professional Well-Being
Following the prompting by the National Academy of Medicine, the American Nurses Association 2020 Challenge Healthy Nurses-Healthy Nation, and a call from American Nurses Foundation to “Reimagine Nursing” this document provides AHNA strategies and recommendations helping nurses and organizations for moving forward in the future. The Promoting Nurse Health and Well-Being Resource Kit integrates holistic strategies and recommendations to address worldwide nurse burnout that is urgently needed.

AHNA Soliciting Workshops, Paper and Posters for 2024 Annual Conference in Rochester, MN
AHNA is accepting educational workshop, paper and poster proposals for the 2024 Annual Conference, Transcending Wellness through Diversity, Equity and Inclusivity, and the conference will be June 3 – 8, 2024 in Rochester, Minnesota at the Mayo Civic Center.

AHNA Promotes Holistic Self-Care for Nurses through One-Day Regional Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana 
On October 19, 2023, the American Holistic Nurses Association will hold a Regional Conference entitled Holistic Self-Care: Your Secret Power for Enhancing Patient Care in New Orleans, Louisiana at the Children’s Hospital State Street Conference Center, Worley Hall. Nurses will learn self-care skills they can use at home or at work, meet local holistic nurses, enjoy a healthy lunch and earn 6 CNE contact hours.

AHNA’s 2023 Holistic Nurse of the Year Award Winner is Michelle McGrorey
Michelle McGrorey, BSN, RN, HNB-BC, HTCP, CCAP, OCN, HMIP, of Las Vegas, Nevada was selected as the 2023 Holistic Nurse of the Year. The Holistic Nurse of the Year (HNY) Award recognizes AHNA members who have contributed to outstanding innovations or changes in the field of holistic nursing. It highlights a nurse who has been working in holistic nursing for several years and has demonstrated a commitment toward AHNA’s core values.

AHNA’s 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award Winner is Linda Bark
Linda Bark, RN, PhD, MCC, NC-BC, NBC-HWC of Black Mountain, North Carolina was recognized as AHNA’s 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. The Lifetime Achievement Award is given to celebrate the outstanding lifetime achievement in the field of holistic nursing; a way of acknowledging all the holistic nursing work accomplished through sustained participation in AHNA and advancing the specialty practice of holistic nursing.

AHNA’s 2023 Holistic Nursing Rising Star is Theodore "Theo" Urbano
Theodore "Theo" Urbano, MA, BSN, APRN, AGCNS-BC, CMSRN, CCP of Alexandria, Virginia was recognized as AHNA’s Holistic Nursing Rising Star of 2023. This award recognizes a new nurse who dedicates themselves to a holistic path, applies creative holistic practices, and epitomizes holism in their personal and professional life.

AHNA’s 2023 Bea Alley Commemorative Scholarship Award Winner is Lauren Tanner
Lauren Tanner of Orlando, Florida received the Bea Alley Commemorative Scholarship. The award allows students to take part in the wonderful benefits at the annual conference so that they may expand their holistic education.

AHNA’s 2023 Circle of Light Foundation Award Winner is Brigitte Sager
Brigitte Sager, MSN, ARNP, FNP-C, NCMP, NC-BC, AFMC, CNE of Silverdale, Washington was awarded $2500 as part of the Circle of Light Foundation donation to the American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) to honor holistic nurses through contributions to the 2023 cycle scholarships.

AHNA’s 2023 Research Grant Award Winner is Christine (Christy) Gipson
Christine (Christy) Gipson, PhD, RN, CNE currently sits as the Associate Professor at the University of Texas at Tyler School of Nursing. The grant money will help fund her research study, The Impact of Professional Nurse Coaching on Well-being of Undergraduate Nursing Students: A Mixed Methods Study.

AHNA’s 2023 Practice Grant Recipient is University of West Georgia for Well-Being and Resilience for Faculty & Staff in a University Setting
The University of West Georgia plans to use the grant to launch a project to create opportunities for faculty and staff to focus on self-care, well-being and resilience in the educational environment. The program will give faculty and students an opportunity to attend an online well-being and resilience program, integrate and sustain the practice of self-care and increase faculty and staff’s knowledge of holistic care of self and other in order to promote the practice of holistic nursing.

AHNA’s 2023 Practice Grant Recipient is Pacific College for Nursing Student Self-Care and Holistic Well-Being Day
With this grant Pacific College plans to incorporate a Student Self-Care and Holistic Well-Being Day in the final semester. They plan to launch a Transition to Professional Nursing Practice course to promote the utilization of accessible self-care modalities, address test-taking anxiety, nurture the awareness of holistic nursing principles, build communal support, and decrease the risk for burnout and compassion fatigue.

AHNA’s 2023 Institutional Excellence in Holistic Nursing Education Award Winner is University of Maine Augusta
The University of Maine Augusta was selected as the 2023 Institutional Excellence in Holistic Nursing Education Award recipient. The Excellence in Holistic Nursing Education Award is intended to recognize schools, programs, and departments of nursing that offer a degree in nursing that exhibits an exceptional, substantive and innovative curriculum in holistic nursing education.

AHNA Announces Jane Foote as President
The American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) announces Jane Foote of Lake City, Minnesota has assumed the presidency of the AHNA effective June 1, 2023. Jane has served as the President-Elect since June, 2021 and previously served on the Board of Directors as the AHNA Treasurer.

American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) Re-Accredited by ANCC as Approver and Provider of Nursing Continuing Professional Development (NCPD)
The American Holistic Nurses Association has been re-accredited as both an Approver and Provider of nursing continuing professional development (NCPD) by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation (ANCC). Thank you to all of the members on the Education Approver Committee (EAC) and Education Provider Committee (EPC) who dedicate their time and energy to do this important work.

AHNA Releases Position Statement on Health Equity and Social Equanimity
AHNA's Diversity Equity and Inclusivity (DEI) Task Force recently authored a position statement addressing health equity and social equanimity. AHNA previously released a press release condemning racism in June of 2020 during the height of the George Floyd tragedy. This formal position statement was recently approved by the AHNA Board of Directors and provides a foundation of AHNA’s views of racism, health equity and social equanimity.

AHNA announces Linda Thomas, PhD, APRN, FNP-C, NPD-BC, CCRN, CHTP/I, HTAP of Sylva, NC as the new AHNA President-Elect position, she will serve her term beginning June of 2023.

AHNA Announces Christine Argenbright Elected Treasurer
AHNA announces Christine Argenbright, PhD, RN, CNL of Harrisonburg, VA as the AHNA Treasurer. Her responsibilities in this position will include overseeing the finances of the organization and all levels of fiscal accountability, determining the vision, direction and guidance for the specialty association and representing holistic nurses nationally and internationally.

AHNA Board of Directors Appoints Maggie O’Brien King to the Board of Directors
AHNA Board of Directors Margaret (Maggie) O’Brien King, PhD, RN-BC, AHN-BC, CNL, HSG, AHN of Naples, FL was re-elected to the Board of Directors. Her responsibilities in this position will include determining the vision, direction and guidance for the specialty association and representing holistic nurses nationally and internationally.

AHNA Board of Directors Appoints Dawn Langley-Brady to the Board of Directors
AHNA has elected Dawn Langley-Brady, PhD, MSN, BFA, AHN-BC, CHPN, CCA of Augusta, GA for her first term on the AHNA Board of Directors. Her responsibilities in this position will include determining the vision, direction and guidance for the specialty association and representing holistic nurses nationally and internationally.

AHNA Board of Directors Appoints Teresa Fadely to the Board of Directors
The current AHNA Board appointed Teresa Fadely, MSN, RN, AHN-BC, ACNP-BC, HWC-BC of Dumfries, VA to fill the one year remaining term of Linda Thomas’ Board of Directors position. Her responsibilities in this position will include determining the vision, direction and guidance for the specialty association and representing holistic nurses nationally and internationally.

AHNA Elects Joyce Morrissette to the Nominating Committee
AHNA has elected Joyce Morrissette, BSN, RN of Arundel, ME to the Nominating Committee. Her responsibilities will include recruiting potential candidates to serve in elected positions for the 2023 ballot, acting on and cultivating leadership in committees assigned by the President and acting as a liaison between the Association and other organizations.

AHNA Appoints Josephine Bodino to the Nominating Committee
Josephine Bodino, DNP, MPA, RN, NEA-BC, HN-BC, from Ridgewood, New Jersey has been appointed by the AHNA Board of Directors to fill the 2 year term vacancy created by Teresa Fadely’s appointment to the Board of Directors. Her responsibilities will include recruiting potential candidates to serve in elected positions for the 2023 ballot, acting on and cultivating leadership in committees assigned by the President and acting as a liaison between the Association and other organizations.

On March 31, 2023, the American Holistic Nurses Association will hold a Regional Conference entitled Holistic Self-Care: Your Secret Power for Enhancing Patient Care in Little River, South Carolina at the C.B. Berry Recreational Center. 

AHNA 2022 Election Results
The 2022 AHNA Elections have come to an end, we would like to thank all of our members for voting. AHNA members had the opportunity to cast their vote November 1-30, 2022 there were a total of 569 ballots cast.

AHNA Announces Liza Simon as the New Editor for Beginnings Magazine
AHNA is pleased to introduce Liza (Elizabeth Anne) Simon as the new Editor of the AHNA’s Beginnings Magazine effective in 2023. Liza will come on to replace Rebecca (Becky) Lara long-time editor for the February 2023 edition, and will be orienting with Becky up until she takes over the Editor position. 

AHNA Announces Rochester, Minnesota as the 2024 Annual Conference Location
AHNA will be bringing their 44th Annual Conference to Rochester, Minnesota. The conference will be Monday, June 3 through Saturday, June 8 at Minnesota’s Rochester Mayo Civic Center. Lodging at the Kahler Grand Hotel & adjacent Rochester Marriott are connected to the Mayo Civic Center via climate-controlled pedestrian skyways allowing easy access to & from the event venue and host hotels.

AHNA Mourns the Passing of Congresswoman, and Integrative Health Champion, Jackie Walorski
AHNA would like to send our thoughts and condolences to the families of Representative Jackie Walorski (R-IN) and her two staff members, Zach Potts and Emma Thomson. Congresswoman Walorski was a long-time advocate of integrative health, serving as Co-Chair of the Integrative Health and Wellness Caucus among other initiatives which she championed.

AHNA’s 2022 Charlotte McGuire Graduate Scholarship Award Winner is Jennifer Shaw-Metz, BSN, RN, CCRN, CHPN
Jennifer Shaw-Metz of West Chester, Pennsylvania is a part time student working toward a Master of Complementary and Integrative Therapy, with a concentration in Holistic Hospice and Palliative Care. She is currently a staff nurse in the Cardio-Thoracic ICU at Paoli Hospital in Paoli, Pennsylvania.

AHNA’s 2022 Bea Alley Commemorative Scholarship Award Winner is Ashlee Burt, MS, RN, PhD Student
Ashlee Burt of Kingsville, Texas is a full time student working on her PhD in Health Promotion and Wellness. The Bea Alley Commemorative Conference Award was named in honor of lifetime AHNA member, Bea Alley, an early leader in holistic nursing, and is intended to keep her memory and enthusiasm alive. The award allows students to take part in the wonderful benefits at the annual conference so that they may expand their holistic education. 

AHNA’s 2022 Institutional Excellence in Holistic Nursing Education Award Winner is Pacific College of Health and Science
The Excellence in Holistic Nursing Education Award is intended to recognize schools, programs, and departments of nursing that offer a degree in nursing that exhibits an exceptional, substantive and innovative curriculum in holistic nursing education. Pacific College of Health and Science in New York, New York RN-to-BSN program. The college was founded in 1986 and offers fifteen degree programs. The holistic nursing program was created in 2009 by Dr. Carla Mariano. 

AHNA’s 2022 Charlotte McGuire Undergraduate Scholarship Award Winner is Kelly Venditto, RN, HN-BC, CPPS
Kelly Venditto of Red Bank, New Jersey is a full time student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in nursing. She is in an RN to BSN degree completion program and has been a registered nurse since 2004.  Kelly’s future goals include progressing through her BSN program and then continuing on to a Master’s program with a focus in Holistic Nursing.

AHNA’s 2022 Holistic Nurse of the Year Award Winner is Lorrine Hall, MSN, RN-BC, AHN-BC, BMsc, BA, CMI
The Holistic Nurse of the Year (HNY) Award recognizes AHNA members who have contributed to outstanding innovations or changes in the field of holistic nursing. It highlights a nurse who has been working in holistic nursing for several years and have demonstrated a commitment toward AHNA’s core values. Over the years, Lorrine Hall of Conyers, Georgia has held many positions within AHNCC as well as AHNA. Lorrine has been a member of AHNA for over 15 years. She works with veterans at the Atlanta VA where she provides interventions focused on individualized and culturally appropriate care for veterans. She uses her holistic health care practices in order to spread awareness on the importance of holistic nursing.

2022 Lifetime Achievement Award Winner is Mary Enzman-Hines, RN, PhD, CNS, CPNP, APHN-BC
The Lifetime Achievement Award is given to celebrate the outstanding lifetime achievement in the field of holistic nursing; a way of acknowledging all the holistic nursing work accomplished through sustained participation in AHNA and advancing the specialty practice of holistic nursing. Mary Enzman-Hines of Aurora, Colorado has been an active member of AHNA since 1995, serving in multiple roles including AHNA President, Education Coordinator, and several more. Mary not only integrates holistic nursing practices into her professional life, but her personal life as well.

2022 Research Grant Award Winner is Caroline Ortiz, MS, MPH, RN, NC-BC
Caroline Ortiz of New York, New York is an associate professor at Pacific College of Health and Science. Caroline was inspired to do her research after she witnessed healing rituals with her grandmother as a child in Texas along the U.S.-Mexico border. Caroline’s research investigates the experience of Mexican American women living in Texas using traditional medicine from Mexico. Caroline currently teaches multiple courses in holistic nursing education at both the undergraduate and post-baccalaureate levels.  She has three peer-reviewed publications and also serves a member of the Board of Directors of the New York Chapter of the Hispanic Nurses Association. 

2022 Institutional Excellence in Holistic Nursing Practice Award Winner is Hackensack Meridian Raritan Bay Medical Center and Hackensack Meridian Old Bridge Medical Center
Hackensack Meridian Raritan Bay Medical Center and Hackensack Meridian Old Bridge Medical Center are one hospital located on two campuses, located in Perth Amoby and Old Bridge, New Jersey. They are institutions dedicated to transforming health care. These hospitals begin their embodiment of holistic nursing with each batch of new employees at their hospitals nursing orientation. Their nursing staff acknowledge the value of providing a holistic approach to health care. Not only do the hospitals support holistic nursing practices, their Integrative Medicine department is an integral part within their institution. Their nurses are encouraged to obtain holistic nursing certification through their Integrative Healing Arts Academy and the facility is committed to their care being human-centered, accessible and affordable. 

2022 Practice Grant: Implementing Institutional Self-Care Award Winner is Shore Medical Center
Shore Medical Center is located in Somers Point, New Jersey and is a Community Cancer Center. In 2021 Shore Medical Center implemented a wellness initiative to recognize “Positive Attitude Month”, where patients and staff were offered stress reduction and self-care opportunities. With their practice grant, Shore Medical Center plans to provide holistic education in self-care techniques to Cancer Center nursing staff to better support a healing environment for staff, patients and their families. 

2022 Practice Grant: Implementing Institutional Self-Care Award Winner is Sutter Health Memorial Medical Center
Sutter Health Memorial Medical Center the second recipient is located in Modesto, California and is a non-profit hospital recognized for it’s in and outpatient surgery services, emergency services, dialysis, obstetrics, intensive care, nuclear medicine and diagnostic imaging services. With their practice grant, Sutter Health Memorial Medical Center will implement a Complementary Holistic and Integrative Exploration Station to support the nursing staff’s self-care journey within holistic wellness.

Certified Nurse Coaches Recognized in Category III CPT Code Definition Effective July 1, 2022
AHNA and the American Holistic Nurses Credentialing Corporation (AHNCC) are pleased to announce that the American Medical Association Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), effective July 1, 2022, will officially recognize Board Certified Nurse Coaches (NC-BC) and Health and Wellness Coaches (HWBC) to be allowed to use the Category III codes for documenting nurse coaching.

AHNA Announces Roxane R. Chan as President
AHNA announces Roxane Raffin Chan, PhD, MS, BSN, AHN-BC of Saline, Michigan has assumed the presidency of the AHNA effective September 16th, 2021, after the resignation of Elizabeth Scala, MSN, MBA, RN, HNB-BC of Baltimore, MD.  Roxane has served as the President-Elect since June, 2021 and previously served on the AHNA Board of Directors as an at-large member.   

AHNA Receives Circle of Light Foundation Grant Award Donation
The Circle of Light Foundation headquartered in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania recently donated to the AHNA to honor holistic nurses by contributing to the following 2022 cycle scholarships: $2500 towards nursing education scholarships as part of the Charlotte McGuire Endowed Nursing Scholarship Program, and, $2500 towards the Bea Alley Commemorative Scholarship.

American Holistic Nurses Association Awards the Compassion Caravan with the 2021 Presidential Award
The Presidential Award in 2021 is for a dedicated group of holistic nurses. Their inspiring idea of celebrating the Year of the Nurse in 2020 by hosting a Compassion Caravan to promote the need for self-care and compassion within the broader nursing profession had to be re-envisioned unexpectedly in March of 2020.   The Compassionate Listening Circles were born in April 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic surges on the East Coast of the U.S., and they were scheduled rapidly and held initially 5 days per week with holistic nurses facilitating them for 1 hour to meet the needs of nursing colleagues.

AHNA has sworn in Elizabeth Scala, MSN/MBA, RN, HNB-BC as the AHNA President for the 2021-2023 term. She was installed at the organization's 41st Annual Conference held virtually June 8-12, 2021.

American Holistic Nurses Association Selects Kristen Reed as Recipient of 2021 Media Award
On June 12th during its 41st Annual Conference, The American Holistic Nurses Association recognized Kristen Reed, BA, BSN, RN, HN-BC, of Lynnfield, MA, as its 2021 Media Award recipient. The Media Award is to recognize reporters, editors, other media personnel and citizens, websites, and mobile apps that have accurately and effectively delivered messaging about holistic nursing to the public.

AHNA Adopts Planetary Health Position Statement
 AHNA recognizes planetary health as essential for future generations to come and that as humans we must take a holistic approach to improving our planets condition. AHNA has adopted a Planetary Health Position Statement and is releasing it today April 22, Earth Day, stressing the importance of planetary health including the inter-relational nature between human and environmental health.

AHNA Board of Directors Appoints Linda Thomas as to the Board of Directors
AHNA Board of Directors has appointed Linda Thomas, PhD, NPD-BC, CCRN, CHTP/I, HTAP of Sylva, NC to the Board of Directors to serve the unexpired term June 1, 2021 thru May 30, 2022 left void with the newly elected President-Elect Roxane Chan. She will serve a one-year term and her responsibilities in this position will include determining the vision, direction and guidance for the specialty association and representing holistic nurses nationally and internationally.
