Florence Nightingale, also known as “The Lady with the Lamp,” was born May 12, 1820, in Florence, Italy. Defying her parents, Nightingale began her long journey into cultivating nursing in 1844 at the Lutheran Hospital in Germany. The World Health Assembly designated 2020 the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife to honor the 200th Anniversary of Nightingale’s birth.

Not much is known about these pieces other than it is a Pyramid Pottery from Staffordshire, England.

The evolution of the tea cup began in China during the eighth century, when the brew was served in small porcelain or stoneware bowls. Since the Chinese drank tea lukewarm, there was no problem handling the bowl.

During the 17th century, tea bowls were being exported into Europe, and by the 18th century, the English were producing tea bowls with oriental motifs. However, since the English liked their tea piping hot, handling the bowl was a problem. The solution came in the form of a matching shallow dish into which the tea was poured and then sipped from. It wasn’t until about 1810 that a handle was applied to the tea bowl and the form evolved into the cup and saucer as we know it today.

The nursing profession began with Florence Nightingale during the Crimean War (1853-1856). She was foundational in her views about sanitation and nutrition and served along with 38 other volunteer nurses authorized by the British Secretary of War. Nurses have been essential in times of conflict and crisis to care for injured soldiers.

Under the Bolton Act in 1943 the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps was established to recognize essential services the members contributed to the war. The National Nursing Council for War Service and by the U. S. Public Health Service carried out an intensive recruitment campaign.

Enrolment in nursing schools of the country was augmented through federal appropriations in the amount of $5,750,000 during the next two years. The acuteness of the military and civilian needs for nursing service, the increasing competition for womanpower, and the development of new attitudes toward use of federal funds for preparation of many types of war workers called for larger appropriations for nursing education.   An intensive recruitment campaign was carried out by the National Nursing Council for War Service and by the U. S. Public Health Service.

The United States is cited as having the highest first-day infant death rate of all industrialized countries due to barriers to pre-natal (pregnancy) care. Mothers without healthcare during pregnancy have more frequent and difficult complications of labor, pre-mature births, and death of the mother and / or infant.

Premature newborns often require support to breath- making eating and growing a big effort. Challenges in pregnancy and childbirth can result in long term health problems for the child, including permanent mental or physical impairments. Registered Nurses working in Labor and Delivery, or Neonatal care units, together with, Certified Nurse Midwives intervene in the cycle of mother-infant fatality by offering parent education and immediate interventions after birth.

Advance Practice Registered Nurse midwives are graduate prepared practitioners. Future legislation for this role will allow greater access to prenatal care in underserved areas and consequently decrease avertible deaths of mothers and infants.

The American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) owns one of the largest Nursing Memorabilia Figurine Collection in the country. AHNA received the collection from the Kansas Nurses Foundation (KNF) in early 2019. The collection was originally owned by Benedict and Elizabeth “Betty” Stanislav from Omaha, Nebraska. Betty Stanislav amassed the collection while working in the nursing profession for over twenty-nine (29) years.  

In 2008, Betty donated the collection to the Kansas Nurses Foundation where it was on display at 1109 SW Topeka Blvd, the Kansas State Nurses Association (KSNA) Headquarters until 2017. When KSNA sold their building, The Kansas Nurses Foundation relocated to the 2900 SW Plass Court the AHNA National Headquarters, where AHNA facilitated the use of the “Board Room” to display the collection and display cases.
